Not lack of space, lack of thoughts : Stubborn and foolish
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: January 23 2016 -
Stubborn and foolish. This should about sum up the Government vis-a-vis its decision to house the women vendors on the roadsides of the busy Thangal bazar.
For two consecutive days Thangal bazar was shut down following the call of Thangmeiband Kendra Development Organisation (TAKDO) with MLA Kh Joykishan leading the way.
So far there is nothing to suggest that the Government is ready to listen to reasoning and come to the realisation that it absolutely makes no sense to house the women vendors along the busy Thangal bazar stretch.
On the contrary the Government seems intent on going ahead with its plan and as things stand today, construction work of setting up the temporary market is on in full swing.
Looking at the construction work there is again nothing to suggest that the market at the Thangal bazar road is a temporary market shed.
Is the Government entertaining the idea of permanently letting the women vendors sell their wares by the roadside ?
Or does it have a different understanding of a temporary market shed ? How about the funds for constructing the market shed, a move which will only inconvenience the movement of the people. ?
It is this stubbornness of the Government which is hard to digest.
The issue which TAKDO and MLA Kh Joykishan have taken up is not a Thangmeiband centric issue.
It concerns the whole of the State, for remember Thangal bazar is the commercial hub of the State and not of Thangmeiband alone.
It is here that the silence of the other MLAs particularly those sitting on the Opposition bench rings out loud.
What is stopping the Opposition MLAs from raising their voice ?
True Thangal bazar may fall within Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency, but the issue is not only about a particular Assembly segment but about the whole State.
What is stopping them from coming forward and voicing their opinion on the issue ?
As stated earlier, it is not that Imphal lacks space but what is lacking is a thinking Government.
Absolutely makes no sense to further crowd the already busy and extremely congested Thangal bazar.
Temporary market shed should not be dictated by temporary plans. This is the bottom line.
