North East students gheraoed Police Headquarters against Police atrocities and inaction on 6th March 2014

Today a Large number of North East students gheraoed Police Headquarters under aegis of NEFIS against Police atrocities and inaction.
Delhi’s police conceded on formation of an enquiry committee.

Large numbers of North East Students gathered around the Delhi Police headquarters to protest against the police atrocities and inaction regarding the unfortunate incident which happened last Friday in Vijay Nagar (Double Storey). On Friday the 28th of February around 10 :30 pm siblings from the North East community were harassed by 4 rowdy men outside a park near their paying guest accommodation in double storey Vijay Nagar. They first urinated in front of the siblings and later trashed the brother and sister. They molested the girl and later attempted rape on her.

The alarm caused by her led to north east students from various communities in the vicinity to gather and offer support. The police arrived shortly but instead of filing an FIR promptly the police resorted to gross dereliction of duty by protecting the accused which led to 3 of the accused going away scot free. Moreover they laughed at the agitating public’s complaints.

Increased pressure by the students led to police steeping to new lows by inciting violence. They slapped a north east girl and started lathi charging at the masses. They also resorted to stone pelting. The actions of the police led to grievous injuries to the students with many suffering broken limbs and many were left to bleed profusely.

To add insult to injury, the police did not even provided MLC facility to the injured parties. Due to incessant pressure by the students the police eventually filed an FIR at early morning. This is just one of the many examples of the police promoting lawlessness, crime against women and racism in the recent past as seen in the instances of Nido Tania, the rape of a Manipuri woman in Munirka etc.

We believe that the police lawlessness is not only an immediate concern of the North East students but also a concern of the local community as this anarchy of police can be unleashed on any vulnerable sections in society.

Regarding the above incident we have submitted a memorandum to the Delhi Police commissioner with our demands being:
(a) The Police Commissioner should form a committee to look into the incident.
(b)The Police Commissioner should take swift action against the police officers involved in the incident
(c) The Police Commissioner should take all necessary steps to instil confidence in the North East Community.

A delegation of NEFIS has met the S.O. to Commissioner and joint Commissioner of Delhi police. They have assured us that they will seriously look into the matter and constituted an enquiry committee with immediate effect to look into the matter of police high-handed and callous attitude towards agitating students.

If this assurance fails to provide justice and if Police doesn’t respond in a satisfactory manner to our concerns and demands we will use all democratic means possible to ensure that no such occurrence takes place. We have already formed area wise security committees starting with Vijay Nagar to prevent such occurrences.

Yours Sincerely,
Chinglen Khumukcham

Sub-Regarding Police atrocities and inaction with regard to an attempted rape in Vijay Nagar.

Sir,

On Friday the 28th of February around 10:30 pm siblings from the North East community were harassed by 4 rowdy men outside a park near their paying guest accommodation in double storey Vijay Nagar. To add insult to injury, the police did not even provide MLC facility to the injured parties and also acted violently on many female students. It is to be noted that there were no women constables and officers during the incident. Due to incessant pressure by the students the police eventually filed an FIR at early morning.

This is just one of the many examples of the police promoting lawlessness, crime against women and racism in the recent past as seen in the instances of Nido Tania, the rape of a Manipuri woman in Munirka etc. It is high time that police take cognizance of their own misdemeanours and acts promptly. Our demands regarding the issue are:

1) The Police Commissioner should form a committee as swiftly as possible to look into the police mishaps.

2) The Police Commissioner should take swift action against all the police officers concerned during the incident.

3) The Police Commissioner should take all necessary steps to instil confidence among the North East community.

We hope you address our concerns and our demands in a satisfactory manner else we will resort to all democratic means available to ensure that no further instances occur.

Yours Sincerely,

North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS)
