North East Festival is all about creating good vibes
o More than three lakhs people visited Delhi’s biggest cultural festival
o Papon, Zubeen, Ankia Bhaona, Raas Leela were some of the major attraction of the festival
o Seminar on Awesome Assam, Flood and Erosion discussed some major issues to attract tourism to Assam and North East
The three days North East Festival which concluded yesterday at IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts. Janpath, New Delhi) was a big hit with North Easterners as well as Delhiites as more than three lakhs people attended the festival from 4th to 6th November.
Papon’s inaugural day block blaster performance, Borkung Hrangkhawl’s rap to Zubeen’s magical voice united the north east and Delhi danced into the tunes of 4th North East Festival. This year Delhi’s band The Local Train, DJ Zaeden, Saby were also invited to perform at the festival to attract more Delhi-NCR crowd which would definitely help in integrating the North Eastern people with the Delhiites.
The North East Rock Battle which was organized as a prelude to the main festival saw more than 50 rock bands from Delhi-NCR and North East competing each other for the first three titles.
Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Convener, North East Democratic Front, inaugurating the festival, said, “North East Festival is a successful, national platform to showcase North East and make people understand about the North East. All of us should support this great initiative.”
Every year North East Festival tries to attract tourists to the north eastern region. As a part of the campaign, this year North East Festival is promoting Assam and Assam Tourism under the platform Destination North East. A special presentation on Awesome Assam by Govt of Assam was made in front of tour operators of Delhi, officials from central tourism ministry.
A group of performers from Assam enthralled the audience at 4th North East Festival with 500 years old Ankia Bhaona “Ram Bijay” by Vaishnavite saint Sankardev. Ankia Bhaonas are a class of one act plays performed in Assam. These plays were written in an artificial Assamese-Maithili mixed language called Brajavali.
Mr Prakash Javdekar, Union Minister of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India came specially to watch the Bhaona and inaugurated it lighting the lamp and was seen amongst the audience till the end of the play. Arjuna Awardee, Olympian Shiva Thapa was felicitated at the festival for his contribution towards sports.
Designers like Dhiraj Deka, Assam, Nabam Aka, Arunachal Pradesh and Garima Saikia Garg, Assam showcased their fabrics in a fashion show to promote North Eastern fashion both folk and modern. Next generation designers like Jagrity Phukan, Pallavi Talukdar were able to grab the attention of the audience with their stunningcreations.
The 4th edition of the three day long North East Festival was attended by around three lakhs people including Delhiites, foreign tourists and people from North East. People enjoyed ethnic dances, rock band performances, photography and Live art exhibition, handloom, handicraft and agri exhibition.The foodcourt which served veg and non-veg dishes from the North East was packed all three days.
Mr. Shyamkanu Mahanta, Organizer-in-Chief, North East Festival said, “We are really happy to claim that North East Festival is the biggest music and cultural festival in the capital now. We are immensely thankful to the people of Delhi and North East for supporting us every year. Our aim has been to promote North East and bridging the gap between the North East and rest of India. We are glad that we have been able create good vibes among people through mainly culture, music, food and fashion.”
