A lady climber from the State, Ningthoujam Bidyapati Devi is among the three members of the 1st NE India Mt Everest expedition team to scale the World's highest peak, Mt Everest today thus registering the entry of the region's climbers into the league of World best mountaineers.

Bidyapati, daughter of Kokngang and Bormani from Mongjam Maning Leikai, under Heingang police stations is the first woman mountaineer from Manipur to scale the highest peak in the world, scripting a sort of history, though the honour of the first person to scale Everest from Manipur goes to Nongmaithem Suresh, who achieved the feat in 2010 .

The 1st North East India top of the world Mt. Everest Expedition which was flagged off from the historic Kangla by Governor of Manipur Gurbachan Jagat on 25th February 2013 and subsequently by President of India Pranab Mukherjee from Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on 20th March 2013, today successfully scaled the highest peak of the world, Mt. Everest (29,029 ft) at 7.30AM (Indian Standard Time) .

The mountaineers of the region now join the league of the best mountaineers in the world. Anand Gurung from Sikkim was the first to reach the summit of Mt. Everest at 7.35 AM (IST) followed by Nima Lama from Arunachal Pradesh at 8.30 AM (IST) and N Bidyapati Devi from Manipur at 9.30 AM (IST) .

First ever successful summit of Mt. Everest by North East Mountaineers

The 1st North East India top of the World Mt. Everest Expedition which was flagged off from historic Kangla by His Excellency the Governor of Manipur Shri Gurbachan Jagat on 25th February 2013 and subsequently by Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon'ble President of India from Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on 20th March 2013, today successfully summitted the highest peak of the World- Mt. Everest (29,029 Ft.) at 7.35AM (Indian Standard Time).

With the successful summit, it will now be listed in the history of the region as the First Expedition comprising exclusively of North East India mountaineers and being supported by Govt, of India and State Government to have scaled the height of Mt. Everest. The mountaineers of the region now join the league of the best mountaineers in the world.

Mr. Anand Gurung from Sikkim was the first to summit Mt. Everest at 7.35AM (1ST) followed by Mr. Nima Lama from Arunachal Pradesh at 8.30AM (1ST) and Ms. N. Bidyapati Devi from Manipur at 9:30AM (1ST). Ms. N. Bidyapati is the first lady from Manipur to summit the Mt. Everest. For the remaining members the Leader of the Expedition Dr. L. Surjit Singh, President, MMTA advised to make the attempt for summit tomorrow due to heavy wind condition. Other members of the team attempting the summit are currently waiting for the opportune climate.

The teams had arrived at the Everest Base Camp (EBC) on 5th April 2013 and have been undergoing acclimatization, during the acclimatization the team reached Camp-Ill (24000 Ft. (Approx.)) on 30th April 2013.

Shri O. Ibobi Singh is the Chief Patron and Shri DS Poonia, IAS, Chief Secretary; Govt, of Manipur is the Chef de-Mission of the expedition.

The 1st North East India top of the World Mt. Everest Expedition is the first ever expedition comprising exclusively of mountaineers from 6 states of North East India. 16 individuals from different states are participating in this expedition including the support team. It is being funded by North Eastern Council, Shillong, supported by Planning Department, Government of Manipur and being implemented by Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association, Manipur.
