Nightingale Song at Dusk
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
It is now high summer;
My skin burns easily.
The end of the world in fire
Seems to be very near.
The noonday sun brings a strange quietness –
I sit alone
Musing on the long queue of hot days
And I feel my muse have deserted me.
There are no trees
Or bushes to give us shades
And the whole town is talking about it.
It has been hot and getting hotter.
It is hot today
The rains do not start this month…
My ears are buzzing.
After a long journey of civilizing and modernizing
My entire world
Today I find
I do not have a leg to stand on.
When I asked you to go away
I was playing games with you;
When I did not mean you to
You had actually gone away.
'Come back, please'.
The title of my new painting is:
'Rain, rain, come back'.
It looks like rain
But never has it started to rain.
It needs more light and shade
More light and shade
And I wish it has many shades of meaning.
Summer is here
Hot and dry summer
And a long summer with no rain.
Loitering alone in our kitchen garden
I put a twig into summer earth
And see at a glance
A bunch of peacock gingers
Have sprouted up, have sprouted up overnight
And I have been blessed with
A shower of kisses of the season.
In life nothing is lost forever
What is apparently lost today
Is found some other day.
A hot and perspiring
Bunch of peacock gingers toils up
The summer earth and smiles
In the sweetness of scorching sunlight
Come rain, come shine.
