SHRI NEWMAN HUNGSHI Akademi Award: Tribal Culture
A noted artiste of Tangkhul folk dance, Shri Newman Hungshi was born in 1962 at Hundung village under Ukhrul District.
From a tender age, he grew up watching his village elders performing folk dance of his tribe fuelling his interest in the art.
Initially he learned Tangkhul folk dance from his elder brother Barnabas Hungshi and later mastered the art from several of his village elders.
An accomplished artiste of tribal folk dance, Shri Hungshi has performed in various cultural events held across the State including Republic Day Celebration cultural show and State level youth festival.
Besides being a popular folk dancer, he is trained in tribal folk music and is also adept in playing several musical instruments which are integral to folk song and dance of the Tangkhuls.
He, at present, is taking a strong interest in preserving and propagating these folk arts.
For his profound contribution in the field of tribal culture, Shri Newman Hungshi is bestowed with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
