New Folktales of Manipur : Book Review
James Oinam *
The present collection documents Meitei beliefs (real as well as imaginary). Some of the many oral versions of Manipuri folktales which the author heard as a child have been presented in a new light. The author has tried to root them in modern context and see how they pan out.
Many folktales and beliefs have sacred and unutterable secrets in their wombs. The author pleads complete ignorance to such occult science, if any, that are taught in the sacred books the Puyas, many of which were burnt while the Meitei kingdom was being converted en masse to Hinduism.
The occult practices mentioned herein are based on personal conversations with native exorcists (known as maiba and maibe, male and female shamans).
The book is available online in print edition on Amazon and Flipkart. E-book version is also available on Kindle.
