Nepalis ecstatic over new sub-divisions in Sadar Hills
Times of India | TNN | Nov 5, 2011, 09.35AM IST,
The Okram Ibobi Singh-government's decision to create three new sub-divisions in the restive Sadar Hills has turned out to be a big boon for the Nepalis as a large area inhabited by them will be almost in the middle of the proposed T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters.
Being the third largest populated community after the Kukis and the Nagas in the Sadar Hills area in Senapati district, the Nepalis, with a population of over 20,000, are the deciding factor in the Kangpokpi assembly constituency. A Nepali leader, Kishore Thapa, won three times in a row from the Kangpokpi constituency.
A large number of Nepalis are also settled in different parts of Sadar Hills including Kalapahar, Sapermeina and Kanglatongbi, the leader said, adding that of the total 45,000 Nepali population in Manipur, almost half of it is in the Sadar Hills area.
"The bifurcation of Kangpokpi into two sub-divisions Champhai and T Vaiching has virtually given a new status to the Nepalis, who have been co-existing in the Sadar Hills area for many years," SHDDC general secretary Tonghen Kipgen said.
