Nagaland: 'Wages Of War' by Tehelka
Nagaland Post | New Delhi, Dec 7 (Agencies)
Various Naga underground factions impose taxes on all and sundry-state government, private business and people- which has been pegged at around a whopping Rs.1300 crore each year while those have been served ‘love letters’ termed as ‘taxation’ a synonym for extortion, has victims live in fear and dread.
The known yet untold story was reported in depth by Tehelka Magaznie based on a ‘research’ conducted by its reporter Jimi Dey Gabriel titled ‘WAGES OF WAR’ posted on the Tehelka.com website.
According to the report, when asked about this by Tehelka, Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L Imchen let slip the truth, “I won’t subscribe to that view, but perhaps there is some truth in it.” He said, “It is not the only factor, though I don’t deny the link. It is not absolute, but some people patronize them.”
Asked how tax collection from government employees continues unhindered, Imchen said, “Unfortunately, some government employees are collaborating with the underground groups. We have been taking certain steps, but I don’t think it would be appropriate to discuss my strategy with the media.”
