NGO push for Manipur model
- Neighbour has shown how to protect indigenous land: Manch
The Telegraph | Guwahati, March 7:
The Prabajan Virodhi Manch - a non-government forum against infiltration - has sought a "Manipur-like" step to protect the land rights of the people from illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Assam.
The convener of the Manch, Upamanyu Hazarika, told reporters here today that the Assam Assembly should take a cue from the Manipur Assembly to provide protection and constitutional safeguards to the indigenous communities to prevent illegal migrants from usurping their land, political and other rights.
Hazarika was referring to the Manipur Assembly unanimously passing three bills in September to regulate influx into the state. However, these bills were fiercely opposed by people from Naga and Kuki communities in the hill areas of Manipur.
