NEHU to have ASEAN centre
The Telegraph | Andrew W. Lyngdoh | Shillong, Nov. 21:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced a proposal to open an Asean Studies Centre at the North Eastern Hill University (Nehu) here during his opening statement at the Asean-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
"I deeply value our collective efforts to revive the cultural pillar of our relations. An international conference on Asean-India cultural links was held in New Delhi in July. We are proposing to open an Asean Studies Centre in our North Eastern Hill University in Shillong," Modi said in his statement.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) was established in 1967 in Bangkok with the signing of the Asean Declaration by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Cambodia joined later, making up the present 10 member states of the grouping.
