My Fair Lady
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
Last night I dreamt about
My fair lady.
Ah, how could I resist
The seductions of the lady who smiled
Revealing a line of juicy teeth
Beautiful like the ripe seeds of a pomegranate!
My dream bloomed
When it was inhabited by
My fair lady
But it died young.
For when I began to feel her
In my recurring dream,
All at once I became conscious
I was sleeping, I was dreaming
And I was always woken;
Our intimacy was short-lived.
What a gateway to ecstasy!
My dream talked in riddles.
In broad daylight
The events of the last night seemed
A bad dream.
She pulled a wry face
When I gave her a penetrating look
And she did not open out;
Her appearance was shrouded in mystery
The moment I looked at her intently.
I took the stairs of life at a run
And I ran and ran
As fast as my legs could carry,
But I slowed down in no time
Not because I was exhausted
But because I did not know
Whereto I was going.
Or did I prefer a relaxed pace of life?
My destination was a flying goal.
My heart burned with love at night
And in the morning, divorced from the night,
My desires were burnt to a cinder.
I moved my queen –
She had no life
Spoke no language...
Only my heart did
And nothing remained of me
But cinders and cinders only.
I flew past flower beds and greenery
Borrowing wings from multicoloured butterflies.
Did the fireflies see your footprints
On moonless nights?
Who was that hiding herself away
Behind the seven colours of the rainbow?
For in my world she lived and moved
And had her being.
O my love!
