Moving outside for higher education : Ghetto mentality has to go
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: April 4 2016 -
Just the beginning of April but the days of tension must be mounting. And for reasons which should be clear to all.
By the middle week of May or maybe a few days after this, the results of Class X and Class XII board examinations will be declared and these must be anxious days for thousands of students.
The situation must be the same for the parents and guardians too.
And the tension will not only be about the results of the examinations but over the question of ‘now what and importantly where’ ?
This is particularly true for students who have just appeared for their Class XII board exams.
What stream should the students pursue in college ? Where ?
The Sangai Express has commented on the lack of educational opportunities after the Class XII stage in the State and there is nothing much to suggest that things will improve in the near future and one point which is acknowledged but never spoken out in the open is the question of safety and security of the students studying outside Manipur.
Just how safe are the young students who go outside to study every year ?
How many students are mentally prepared and are ready to socialise and mix with their counter parts from other parts of the country once they are outside the State ?
How deep does the ghetto mentality run amongst the young students who go outside to study every year ?
Is it a case of the students happy to socialise and mix only amongst students from the region or are they primed to socialise with students from other parts of the country ?
These questions are important for in as much as a number of people in other parts of the country have a preconceived notion about the North East people, it is also true that many of the young students who go outside to study do not think it important to mix with students from other parts of the country.
Absolutely makes no sense for the young students to socialise only with students from the North East region.
This is the time for growing up and the process of growing up can only be that more enjoyable and fruitful if one takes the opportunity that comes along with socialising and mixing with others.
Parents, elders and society as a whole need to educate the youngsters on this aspect and encourage them to mix and socialise with others.
In this way, the people to people contact can improve and the pre-conceived notions can be removed to a certain extent.
The ghetto mentality has to go if one is to improve one’s personality and this has got a lot to do with one’s education.
Makes absolutely no sense for one to study outside and come back without knowing how to converse in a language other than one’s own mother tongue !
