Mizoram: In the talibanization process- III

By:- Lalengzuol Hmar *

"Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Roman 13: 1.

"No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man's permission when we require him to obey it". Theodore Roosevelt.

Looking at the present situations arising out there in Mizoram, let us look back some social institutions and their modus operandi in pre-Christian Mizo society. One of the most important institutions of that era is Zawlbuk. The legislative assembly of today may be compared to Zawlbuk in the pre-Christian period. The Zawlbuk was the centre of village activities. It was something like an athletic club, a volunteer fire brigade, and a military barrack all in one, which is also emergency force in case of an attack or other external dangers. Thus, such public-spiritedness had traditionally been a feature of the Zawlbuk, a bachelors' home for the unmarried young men of the village. The decree issued by the Zawlbuk was always final and unquestionable. The power of the Zawlbuk had no boundary or limit. By the orders of Zawlbuk, the youths could demolish a widow's house if she failed to show good hospitability to the young men. The roots of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) of today may be traced to the institution of Zawlbuk. In the best analysis, the YMA is more supreme than the Zawlbuk. It has certain similarities with that of the Arms Forces Special Power Act-1958 (AFSPA), a draconian weapon which is used by the army officers to counter the insurgency movements in Northeast India. In AFSPA, the army officer has a license to kill for mere suspicion of any person. Similarly the YMA could murder people in the name of encountering liquors and drug trafficking.

Today the main problem which is being experienced in the state of Mizoram is the intoxication of powers both from the constitutionally elected members of legislative assembly and the members of YMA who enjoy the power of primitive-Zawlbuk. This is also the case with the Islamic countries which they called 'republic' for name's sake but Islamism itself is the dictator. As a matter of fact, there is no democratic form of government in any Islam countries. Now we came across the reality and its own contradiction on November 29 at Aizawl. Because of the pressure from the YMA supreme leadership, the District Magistrate C. Tawnluaia was under obligation to release the accused who were involved in the Mission Vengthlang death incident. As the situation posed a threat to law and order, the DM had no choice but to release the nine YMA accused on an interim bail. This incident is the first of its kind in the history of Mizoram where the nine YMA murderers received a hero's welcome at the locality on the night they were released. The two Central YMA leaders, vice president T Sangkunga and assistant secretary Lalruatkima also witnessed the vulgar scene. The DM was quoted to have said that he released the accused in order to maintain law and order which could erupt into an uncontrollable one as members of YMA at Mission Vengthlang could come out en masse to create vandalism. Eye-witnesses said the ceremony was attended by about 200 people. While some people of the locality were against honoring the accused but the Ghost and the Darkness had come and conquered the Mission Vengthlang. Revelation 13:1, 16&18 already spoke these events, "And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his horns, and each head a blasphemous name. He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man`s number. His number is 666."

When the most central and fundamental teachings of Christ are no longer accepted as the pure truth even among the Church's own elite and administrators, the end of true Christianity is undeniably at hand in Mizoram. The message of empty pews is quite clear from the Mission Vengthlang incident. The established and official Churches have fearfully neglected to inform their parish about the correct teaching of the Bible and have failed to instruct their congregation to follow the correct approach to religion but tended to promote forces everywhere. Look at Romans 13:1. Saint Paul tells us what should be our attitude to the governing authorities. He said everyone must submit to the governing authorities. Many peoples, especially young people do not have obedient mind to the authorities. Without any special reason they are against the authority. Why should we submit ourselves to the governing authorities? Look at Roman 13: 1b, "It is because there is no authority except that God has established." The initiator of all authorities is God. So if we rebel against the authority, it means that we are rebelling against what God has instituted. The purpose of God's instituting the authority is to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. Who are the YMA rebelling against the authority of the District Magistrate? They are not only rebelling against the governing authority, but also rebelling against what God has instituted. The YMA youths who did so will bring judgment on themselves.

The infamous bandit Queen Pholan Devi became the heroine in her own era when she killed more than 25 at one time. Mention may be made during her interview with the press, "To become a heroine may cost more than 20 lives, otherwise you may be just a murderer". It is now very difficult to distinguish between a murderer and a hero in Mizoram because the release of the accused in the death incident happened to turn out 'heroes'. Speeches were made. Central YMA vice president T Sangkunga, R Vansanga, and Lalrokima, former branch presidents of Mission Vengthlang YMA, were present at the function which was organized to "celebrate the release of the murderers," according to some unidentified journalists who also attended the function. Every man on earth with a clear conscience will ask how and why murderers can turn out to be heroes! As we all know, Mizoram is predominantly a Christian state and this particular death resulting from beating was not only unbiblical but also barbaric which deserves condemnation from all irrespective of any religion they belong to. What else to say now? The Ghost and the Darkness have come and ruled over Mission Vengthlang, Aizawl. Strange things happen naturally in this land of fraudulence! For sometime Mizoram was like a paradise but now it is being turned into a burning hell by its own 'Tlawmngai citizens'.

At one point of time, of all the North eastern states, Mizoram produced the largest number of central civil service officers. No matter how high its literacy percentage may be, it is now at the bottom line in term of UPSC successful candidates. The fact is that, students from the primary school levels are over engaged both in Church and YMA related activities. They have no choice but to involve them in such activities otherwise the YMA leadership would nail, yell or rebuke them by questioning even their Mizoness. Competitive examinations of today is not like those days of 60s, 70s and 80s due to the emergence of fourth generation elite who have been born and brought up in the cosmopolitan cities. Thus, in view of the present scenario Mizo students and their future careers are bleak and doom. I really wonder when few of our senior IAS officers like Pu. V.L Ringa, P.L.Thanga, Saichhuana, P.C.Lawmkunga, Lian Kunga etc, get retirement, who will occupy their place?

Most surprising, when such heinous crimes were committed, where are the chief minister and his colleagues? Is Mr. Zoramthanga still dreaming of Greater Mizoram without giving a damn to his state domestic affairs? Or does he suffer from YMA-phobia? Instead of governing the state, he constantly volunteers himself for the on-going Indo-Naga peace-talk and befriends himself with various militant outfits. Now and then Aizawl becomes a safe heaven for leaders like KNA, ZRA and USRA etc. During the height of his last vote campaign in Champhai district four persons of the ZRA cadre were apprehended with arms and ammunitions by the Mizoram Armed Police (MAP), however they were all freed on the following night because of "one powerful man!" Now some of them are still present in Champhai district with full combat dress and they sometimes impose tax to some businessmen. Or does it mean that Zoramthanga is using ZRA cadres to serve his own interest? All the time, he talks about many juicy tales which are only fit for inclusion in a book of fiction. Zoramthanga is like King Nero who could sing a song while Rome was burning! Thus I would rather sing a song with Zoramthanga while the city of Aizawl is in flame..! How Great Thou Art!

O Great Chief Mr! When I in awe-some wonder;

Consider all the crimes that they commit.

I see their tear, I hear their awesome cryings.

YMA's power through-out Zoram displays
