PAMPHLET
CONDEMN RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ON THE NORTHEAST PEOPLE
Dear friends,
MSAD would like to condole for the untimely departure that Nido Taniam was forced to take by the criminal. We share the pain of the aggrieved family. We protest the crime and strongly condemn the criminal. At the same time the physical assault of two Manipuri women at Kotla Mubarakpur is also an act of racially targeted sexual harassment frequently faced by the women of North-East in the Indian metropolitan cities. We condemn all these acts of racism continuously perpetrated by the mainstream Indian.
This is not the first time that we from the Northeast are being forced to take to the street to demand for justice against Indian racism. The Indians have been carrying out series of unabated and deliberate racial discrimination on us for our different physical look and linguistic ascent. In many instances we were being singled out as different and inferior from the rest of the Indians and overcharged, branded, castigated, insulted and harassed by the local landlord, neighbourhood, shopkeepers, taxi and rickshaw drivers, officials and law enforcing agents. In this scenario, it is not preposterous to ask ourselves –‘Are we an Indian or Indian alike!’
The broad daylight fatal assault on Nido Taniam was a repetition of racism. These incidents had been happening frequently to the migrant students and employees from the Northeast. The frequency of racial assaults increases despite feigning policing and counselling and advisory sent by the MHA. Therefore, it is more than a legal issue. Instead, these incidents reflect an arrogant and barbaric cultural practice meted out by the mainstream Indians; they think us inferior and vulnerable. In short India is yet to treat us fraternally and provide us with security. We are unsafe in the Indian metropolitan cities!
