Mass hunger strike for ILP bill
- 20 held since Thursday
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom | Imphal, Aug. 21:
After blocking roads and clashing with police for more than a month, the movement for inner-line permit (ILP) or a similar legislation has taken a new turn with many activists launching indefinite hunger strikes for the past few days.
Waves of such strikes, sweeping through the valley districts, are mounting more pressure on the Okram Ibobi Singh government to introduce and pass a bill that can protect the indigenous people of the state.
Since last night, police arrested 20 hunger-strikers, including girl students and an elderly woman from four places in Imphal West, Imphal East and Thoubal. Those arrested are either being treated at hospitals or sent to judicial custody and juvenile homes.
