Manipur celebrates 68th Republic Day
With the nation celebrates the 68th Republic Day to commemorate the date on which the Constitution of India came into being on 26th January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act, 1935 as the governing document of India, the State also celebrated the day today.
In the main function held at the historic Kangla Fort, the Chief Guest Dr. Najma A Heptulla, Governor, unfurled the Tricolour and inspected the guard of honour accorded by a contingent of 1st IRB. The Chief Guest also took the salute of March Past Contingents headed by Parade Commander Mamata Wahengbam SP CID (Technical). 65 contingents including Uniforms, Schools, Colleges and Bands, 13 Cultural Troupes and 13 Tableaux participated in the March Past.
The Governor handed over Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service to Shri Mohendro Singh Mangshatabam, Station Officer, Manipur Fire Service and Leading Fireman Shri Khuman Shan Johnson Tangkhul.
Chief Minister Shri Okram Ibobi Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Gaikhangam, Speaker, Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, DGP, senior civil and police officials and people participated in the celebration.
Felicitating the Contingents at the Parade Ground of 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles, the Chief Minister said, with the attainment of Independence in 1947, India has become a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic, the country has become one of the powerful and fast growing nations in the world.
The State also witnessed a see change in terms of development and advancement in various fields. Citing the problem of law and order as an obstacle in developmental activities in the State, the Chief Minister said, it has been a major concern for all as it affects the people as a whole.
He appealed the UG groups to shun violence and come forward to resolve issues with peaceful and democratic means.
