Manipur blockade for a new district
Times of India | TNN | Dec 5, 2011, 06.26AM IST,
What is the reason for the economic blockade in Manipur?
The indefinite economic blockade which entered its 121st day on Monday when it was temporarily withdrawn is over the demand for a separate district. Manipur's Senapati district has two autonomous councils - the Manipur North Autonomous District Council ( MNADC) and theSadar Hills Autonomous District Council(SHADC).
What are the ethnic conflicts involved?
The major tension is between the people living on the hills and those who live in the plains. Manipur's largest ethnic group is the Meiteis who primarily live in the valley. Although they account for more than half the state's population, they hold barely one-tenth of the land.
What is the current situation?
The most recent annual report of the Union home ministry says that Meitei insurgents are mainly responsible for the violence. The Nagas, on the other hand, were responsible for major blockades. In 2010, elections were held in six autonomous district councils of the state.
