Human rights and women's activists in insurgency-hit Manipur have welcomed the Justice J S Verma panel's report recommending amendments to the controversial Armed Forces Special (Powers) Act (AFSPA). The panel was set up to suggest stronger laws to punish perpetrators of crime against women in the country.
"We warmly welcome the recommendation that strongly pointed out not only the need to amend certain provisions of the Act, but also to review it wholly. It will have a big impact on safeguarding the honour of women living in conflict zones if implemented," Babloo Loitongbam, executive director of Human Rights Alert (HRA) told this reporter.
