Malom supports Irom Sharmila
The Telegraph | Imphal, Nov. 5:
The Malom neighbourhood, which witnessed the killing of 10 civilians leading to Irom Sharmila’s 11-year fast, rose in union today to lend a voice to the Iron Lady against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
Mass sit-ins were held in various parts of the state to mark the beginning of the 12th year of Sharmila’s fast, demanding scrapping of the “draconian law”. Police dispersed a group of students who staged a sit-in front of the city’s Kangla fort.
Today is the fourth day of the Festival of Hope, Justice and Peace, during which a series of programmes were organised under the aegis of the Just Peace Foundation, a Sharmila support group. The festival will end tomorrow with a public meeting here.
“We can never bring back my son. If the act is repealed, the relatives of those killed and people of Malom would be compensated to some extent. We are fully with Sharmila and we will not be in peace until this act is repealed,” Tokpam Samarendra, 70, said.
