Making education the first priority : Governor bang on target
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: October 28 2016 -
Governor Najma Heptulla could not have put it better. Make education the first priority. The venue and the timing was also just right to come out with such a profound address.
Addressing the freshers meet cum literary and cultural meet of Tamphasana Girls’ Higher Secondary School, the Governor hit the right chord by focusing on education and reaching out to the students with her call to be the best in whatever they do.
This is also the time for everyone to ponder over the question of whether the right ambience has been created for the young students to pursue their academic career.
Moreover serious thoughts also need to be given on why numerous students deem it better to head for destinations outside the State once they finish their Class XII here.
A question which has been raised here more than once.
Now with the Governor issuing the clarion call to the students to make education their first priority, it is more than right that all and not only the students get down to the business of mulling over the suggestion of the Governor.
And to make education the first priority of the young students, the right ambience has to be created.
Will not help anyone when schools and colleges remain closed most of the time due to one reason or the other, when young students are herded outside their class rooms and made to participate in issues which should ideally be left to the adults of society and when students are used as pawns in the politics of one upmanship of the adults.
Technically the Governor may have been addressing students of a particular school, but taking the reality of the situation here, her call should be taken to heart by the student community as one.
It is also right that others, meaning the adults of society and the numerous civil society organisations which are here ask themselves the question of whether the right ambience has been created for the young students or not.
A look at the reality should tell a story of its own and this is what is disturbing to note.
It was in cognizance of this fact that the Governor also appealed to all concerned not to disturb education under any circumstances and this should say something about the reality here.
Creating the right ambience for the students should then be the collective responsibility of all, for this is about the future of the land and the people.
For too long the fate of the students has been hijacked by one issue or the other and while it remains that all issues will fundamentally affect everyone, this should not be the reason why young students should be literally dragged out from their class rooms and made to take to the streets to highlight an issue which should be dealt by the adults of the society.
The Governor has spoken her mind and it is only right that the people respond positively to her insights.
