Mad, mad rush for marks : Presence of dubious institutions
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: February 26, 2015 -
Not ready to labour for education but more than ready to pay for marks.
This should sum up the mad rush by some parents to get their children admitted to some schools which have gained a certain degree of notoriety come exam time.
There are reasons for the Central Board of Secondary Education to issue a strict guideline to the schools in Manipur to check use of unfair means during the Class X and Class XII exams.
Unfortunately it should be more than apparent that it is not the students, per se, who need to be checked but in some cases the manner in which some schools approach these exams.
Again there are reasons why numerous students who are to appear for the Class X and Class XII examinations have still not received their admit cards.
This is a classic case of taking parents, guardians and of course students on a ride by some unscrupulous elements, under the cloak of education.
What makes their task all that easier is the blind obsession with marks and more marks, never the mind the fact that the students do not get to learn anything in the process.
That there are some schools, especially those affiliated to the CBSE, which have earned dubious distinctions down the years should have been enough cause of concern for everyone, especially parents and guardians of school going children.
However as the number of students testifies, whose future today stand at stake, it may be safe to surmise that this has not worried numerous parents. This is not a good sign for society.
Student organisations, exam invigilators, volunteers and Government functionaries may step out to check use of unfair means, but all these measures fall flat on its face in the face of so many institutions with dubious antecedents prospering.
As things stand today, there are many students in danger of losing a precious academic year because they are yet to receive their admit cards.
Why is this so is a question that ought to have been raised a long time back.
The Government, no doubt has to act, but it is more urgent and more important that parents and guardians too act more responsibly.
It makes absolutely no sense to send one’s children to an institution just so that good marks are guaranteed for their children.
The concern should be about the knowledge of the child and not merely marks.
So far there is nothing to suggest that some lessons have been learnt from the bitter experience of some of these students but such a situation cannot be allowed to carry on.
Parents and elders should also realise that in sending their children to any of these dubious institutions they are sealing the fate of the young ones.
This is not rocket science technology, but if at all any parents or elders understand the true meaning and essence of education then there would be no room for these dubious institutions.
Time also right for all to come to the point that no one should toy around with the future of the young students.
