Lying in state for over 6 months : All pervading trust deficit
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: March 11 2016 -
Lying in state since August 31/September 1 last year. The nine bodies at Churachandpur, that is.
And it is to mark the 200th day of the eruption of protest against the three Bills passed by the State Assembly on August 31 last year that the Churachandpur JAC has decided to impose a 15 hour shutdown in Churachandpur town and the adjoining areas on March 18.
200 days is a pretty long time but more than this is the point that the angst of the people against the three Bills is yet to die down.
This is what is disturbing and worrying.
With the State Government showing no signs that it may review the three Bills and on the other hand the Churachandpur JAC steadfast in its demand that the three Bills should be withdrawn, the coming days may be anything but peaceful.
On the other hand is the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System which has seemingly thrown its weight behind the three Bills and an issue which should have bound the indigenous people together is today threatening to tear them apart.
Something, somewhere is terribly wrong and the present stand off may have something more to do than the three Bills but may point to the deep rooted sense of suspicion between different communities.
How and when such a train of thought began to occupy the mind of the people is tough to say, but it would be for the good of everyone to acknowledge that there is indeed all round trust deficit amongst the indigenous communities here and this could be the root cause of the deep divide amongst the people.
It however stands that the people cannot afford to let this continue forever.
This is the age of excellence and the right ambience ought to be created for the younger generations to be able to realise their true worth.
Is the present climate conducive for the youngsters to bloom and excel ?
The answer should be obvious to all and this is where it becomes important for the adults of society to sincerely introspect and see how to right things.
So for 15 hours Churachandpur is going to shut down on March 18 and who will be the most affected ?
Better it would be to look beyond the day, which is March 18, and see how the present situation will impact on the young minds.
This is not the time for one upmanship but to see what the future holds for the youngsters.
More importantly, are the present adults paving the right path towards the future, is a question that is worth pondering over.
Time for everyone to come and sit down at the negotiating table and talk things over.
Absolutely makes no sense if an issue which should be about protecting the interests of the indigenous people poses a threat to the idea of a Manipur as a geo-political reality.
