5th April 2015:
Lunar Eclipse observed at Imphal, Manipur, India: 24°48′28″ N, 93°56′39″ E by Astrophysics group, MU
An astrophysics team comprising of Prof. Kangujam Yugindro Singh of the Department of Physics, Manipur University and his students namely, Dr. I. Ablu Meitei of Modern College, S. Ajitkumar Singh and Kh. Samananda has successfully observed the lunar eclipse of April 4, 2015 at Imphal using a Celestron 14 inch telescope coupled with an Optec de-focuser and a Cannon DSR camera. The astronomical event was observed starting from 6.16 PM when the moon was above the horizon.
The lunar eclipse was observed to have continued till 7.15 PM. Though the lunar eclipse was, as such, a total eclipse it was observed as a partial eclipse at Imphal. This is because the total lunar eclipse had its peak at 5.30 PM when the moon was far beneath the horizon.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and forms a straight line so that the Earth blocks any direct light from the Sun to reach the Moon.
The astrophysics team took full video coverage of the rare astronomical event for its entire period of observation that is from 6.16 PM to 7.15 PM. The total lunar eclipse of April 4, 2015 is reckoned as the one having the shortest duration of this century.
