Losing a rare opportunity
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: February 12, 2014 -
As the Supreme Court of India has described, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may be a ‘caged parrot’ speaking and acting at the behest of its master (read any ruling party and Government of the day).
But given a choice, people across the country in general and particularly those in the Northeast region would rather opt for CBI over police for investigation into any cases to redress their grievances.
This is simply, because police administration and functioning across the country including in the National capital Delhi has been just pathetic, thus, taking away the trust and confidence of the people on the ability of the police forces to initiate prompt action, investigate and deliver un-corroded justice to the aggrieved parties.
So, the police inaction and failure has been at the heart of the demand raised by the people for roping in the service of the CBI for investigation into any cases.
We assume that this was the same feeling that the family members and close relatives of Nido Tania had when they approached and met Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday, who acting on their request promptly ordered the CBI to investigate into the death of the 19-year old student from Arunachal Pradesh after he was brutally assaulted by some shopkeepers at Lajpat Nagar market in South Delhi following an altercation provoked by a racist comment on the colour of his hair on January 30 last.
True to our assumption, some news agencies have quoted Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde as saying, "The family wants that the investigation should be conducted by CBI. So, we have decided to hand over the case to CBI."
But the point that we would like to raise here is what is there left for the CBI to investigate into the case?
Mind you, Nido Tania was beaten up to death in broad daylight by a group of shopkeepers in a market place in front of hundreds of people.
Delhi Police have already arrested the culprits and they have been subsequently charged with murder under Section 302 of IPC after the post-mortem report revealed that Nido Tania died due to injuries to his head and face caused by hitting with blunt objects.
In other words, the case of Nido Tania is an open and shut case.
Of course, how the Delhi Police first tried to ignore the incident altogether and washed off their hands completely until a damning video recording showing two of their personnel taking Nido away in their vehicle only to be brought back for the shopkeepers to beat up the young innocent student to death came into circulation and how it dragged on its feet in taking up the case, for which the Delhi High Court had chided the conduct of the entire Delhi Police, are well known.
In such a situation, by ordering the CBI to probe into the case of Nido Tania (even if, it is what his family wants), Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has only abdicated his responsibility by given up a rare opportunity of taming a notorious police force in the National capital, which is under the command of Central Government.
