Loitam Richard tragedy strikes chord in Chennai
The Telegraph | G.C. Shekhar | Chennai, May 6
Evening visitors to the Elliots Beach were greeted by a large banner showing the smiling face of Richard Loitam, who was found dead in his college hostel on April 17. In front of it, a throng of students and professionals from the Northeast alleged the Manipuri student was murdered and called for a thorough probe.
The beachfront protest appeared to kindle curiosity among Chennai residents, used to noticing people from the Northeast mostly at beauty parlours, department stores and restaurants.
Some people were surprised to find incense sticks planted in a bunch of bananas placed in front of Loitam’s photograph along with a coconut, since it closely resembled the Tamil custom of remembering people on their death anniversary. One of the protesters explained that a similar tradition existed in Manipur.
