Light and Shade
K. Padmakumar *
Sitting in a quiet corner on the verandah
In the twilit gloom
I feel my mind is wandering -
Remain the world will as it is
Even after I lie at rest.
If the sun shines without drawing
A clear line of demarcation
between night and day
If the moon rises all the time
Without fine discrimination of
the new moon and the full moon
Who will be burning to look at
The beautiful moon
And will gaze at her
With pure adoration
and offer up prayers?
When the first rays of the light
falls on the sea of sweats
I slog my guts out till the setting sun
vanishes behind the horizon
And till I fall sound asleep on the lap
of the goddess of slumber;
Ah! At the unattainable kiss of death
The bitter taste of life is sweetened.
