Licypriya Kangujam embarks on 5 Nation visits to Thailand, Spain, Portugal, France & Egypt

In Bangkok, she will address as a special guest in Asian Children Summit 2019.
8-years-old Indian Climate Activist Ms. Licypriya Kangujam today embarks on 5 nation visits to Thailand, Spain, Portugal, France & Egypt. She will address on 28th November in the Asian Children Summit 2019 as a special guest in Bangkok, Thailand which is being organized from 25th – 30th November on the invitation of SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) SAIEVEC.
She will also attend United Nations Climate Conference 2019 (COP25) in Madrid, Spain on the special invitation of Ms. Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) from 2 – 14 December 2019 where world leaders from over 170 countries are also attending.
She is the only child from India and going to be the youngest Indian to attend this high level United Nations event. She will also address in various children and youth sessions during the COP25. Swedish Climate Activist Greta Thunberg also attending the COP25 and they will be meeting to discuss further course of action.
She will also visit Portugal & France as a part of her child movement to meet the fellow climate activists to address their concerns to the national leaders. Later, she will travel to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt to attend the World Youth Forum 2019 on the special invitation of the President of Egypt Mr. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Before departure to Bangkok today, Licypriya address to the media in IGI Airport that, “My visit to these 5 nations are very important to address my concerns on behalf of the children and youth of the Asia-Pacific region to unite the world leaders to protects our rights and to fight the global climate change together. It is a critical time. A time when together, we must raise our voice and collective ambition concerning climate change to advance the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement and to increase global climate action by striving to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius. National governments cannot carry out this monumental change alone – everyone has a role to play in climate action.”
She further added, “Asian Children Summit is also very important platform to raise the voice of children to transform the words into action to safeguards and protects the rights of the children in these region. SAIEVEC, an apex body of SAARC is working tirelessly to implement this into action.”
“I am only a child yet I know all the money spend on war if we spend on finding environmental answers, ending poverty and giving education then what a wonderful place this earth would be. And also, I am thankful to all invitees and governments for sponsoring my whole expenses to attend various programs in these 5 nations. I am grateful to them”, she further added.
Asian Children Summit 2019 is being organized to marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC), the most widely ratified international human rights treaty body.
The UN CRC is considered a landmark treaty that recognizes children as human beings who are entitled to a distinct set of fundamental rights. It sets out non-discrimination, best interest of the child, right to survival and development, and child participation as the guiding principles for the realization of children’s rights. The UN CRC is complemented by three Optional Protocols on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict (OPAC); Sale of Children, Child Prostitution, and Child Pornography (OPSC); and Communications Procedure (OPIC).
Asian Children Summit is an effort to create a common voice for children of Asia to commemorate the 30 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in a child-friendly, inclusive, and gender-sensitive space for children from South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia to come together to form their opinions and give recommendations on the realization of their rights.
During the Summit, the recommendations are targeted to be presented to various National Leaders, Members of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, Representatives from UN ESCAP, Secretary-General of SAARC o Representatives from ASEAN, Select National and Local Governments (i.e. agencies working on housing, water, food), Head of International Non-Government Organizations o Representatives of the Private Sector, ICT on children and the environment: Google, Facebook, Twitter, game developers, etc.
From each Asian country, 2 children (a boy and a girl) selected through a process by the SAIEVAC National mechanisms with the due consideration and consultations of the member states as per the SAIEVEC Policy. The program is fully funded by SAARC SAIEVEC.
It can be noted that Licypriya is playing a leading role in Asia Pacific by raising the voice of children all over the world. So far she traveled over 20 countries as a part of her movement. She is demanding Government of India to enact the climate law as soon as possible to regulate the greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints. She received supports from over 120 nations with her thousands of followers.
