Akademi Fellow
Born in 1925 at Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai, Imphal, Shri Laishram Samarendra Singh is a celebrated Manipuri poet who is widely regarded as the harbinger of modem Manipuri poetry whose literary career adorned with several coveted honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Manipur State Kala Akademi Award for Literature and Kavi Ratna.
Educated at the prestigious Calcutta University, his first poem ‘Lei Langba’ appeared in 1946 in a publication entitled Khonjel published by Calcutta Manipuri Student Association.
This work, which later went on to become a classic, gave enough indication that a great Manipuri poet was in the making. His first anthology of poems Wa Amatang Haige Telanga came out in 1962.
This was followed by another collection of poems Mamang Leikai Thambal Shatle (1974), a critically acclaimed work which won several prestigious awards including Sahitya Akademi Award.
His other works in the genre include Khul Amagi Wari (1985) Wakchinggi Kavita (1999), Sanakeithelgi Laiphadibi (1999).
With a vast reservoir of imageries, his poems bewailed - though in a subtle and subdued tone - the hypocrisy, corruption, immorality etc. that had sickened the Manipuri society of his time.
Though many of his works are satirical in nature and exude pent up anguish and frustration, they are not without suggestiveness and hints that are hallmark of a great philosopher. A humbled and modest person, he is also one of most admired and celebrated among the modem Manipuri poets.
In recognition of his rich and invaluable contribution to modern Manipuri literature, especially poetry, Shri Laishram Samarendra Singh is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Fellow.
