E-Pao! Essay - Krishna consciousness is the way to peaceful life

Krishna consciousness is the way to peaceful life

By: RK Gopalsana Singh *

The International Conference on ‘Science and Spirituality for World Peace’ was held on November 23-24, 2007 at Imphal, Manipur (India).

The conference was organised by the University of Bhagavat Culture at Jubilee Hall, in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Psychology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

The moment I received invitation with programme, I started thinking that it would be a conference wherein interwoven conceptual discourses on science and religion would be coming up for discussion and understanding.

From the programme I knew that the International Conference was mainly organised with a view to giving a tribute to late Dr TD Singh who is also known as His Holiness Bhaktisvarup Damodar Swami by his students and disciples.

Dr T D Singh was the student and disciple of the World Famous spiritual teacher and saint His Divine Grace Shrila AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad, the founder of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) as well as Bhaktivedanta Institute.

Damodar Swami was the International Director of the Bhaktivedanta Institutes and Founder-Rector of the University of Bhagavata Culture (UBC). The UBC is a centre for learning in the deeper meaning of life and universal knowledge.

Dr TD Singh established the richly coloured Shri Shri Radha Krishnachandra Manimandir as the centre-piece of the University of Bhagavata Culture. Dr Singh was also the Founder-President of Manipur Peace Committee. He authored and edited several books - Seven Nobel laureates on science and spirituality and Towards or Culture of Harmony and Peace.

Dr TD Singh himself was a scientist. Once he spelt out the theory of life. He remarked that scientists might be able to find out the reality of ingredients of life and put them to-gether as a lump to form a life. It is not so.

Such is the stage of thinking reality where further search for the origin of life is considered to be the handiwork of God. Under such circumstances the scientists and spiritualists come to a common platform where thought and deductions help each other.

"Science without religion is lame.
Religion without science is blind
".
— Albert Einstein.

After hearing some of the discourses from internationally reputed scholars, I came to a conclusive and convincing arena that the sponsorship of the International conference extended by the Department of Clinical Psychology, Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) is quite reasonable.

Again, spiritual life is greatly helped and guided by science. On the look out of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, it is in need of almost all branches of science. Because doctors’ domain of professional working is the society with individual life.

The spirituality or the world-view on religion in its purest form, develops the ‘Morality’ of humanity by understanding deeper dimension of reality of outcome. Science, on the otherhand helps humanity and its social and religious life in various aspects of physical reality.

Spirituality, the essence of religious principles guides humanity with proper vision for attaining a happy and peaceful society whereas science educates the religious doctrinaires to accomplish it.

Thus the two systems of knowledge could bring the way for lasting peace in the world. Therefore, citizens and spiritualists feel the idea that now is the time to have a co-operative dialogue between scientists and spiritual masters for achieving lasting world peace.

Albert Einstein: (1879-1955), born of German-Jewish parents at Wurttemburg, Germany was educated in Switzerland. He went to England and the United States of America in 1930s. His return to Germany was not desirable as the anti-Jewish Nazi Government did not favour him.

He became an American nuclear scientist during the early part of Second World War. In his old age, he wanted peace. He wished there should be a control over nuclear blasts. The above slogan, now becomes workable in science and spirituality in the world order.

The commentary shows his inclination towards religion which is in conformity with modern scientific truth. Albert Einstein died in America at his personal age of 76.

Opinions in the Conference Hall:

On the second day, the session 5, second sitting of the day was presided over by Prof L Fimate, Director, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. All the scholars, both foreign and Indian spoke in English. However, all of them appeared to have been wedded to the studies of India’s Vedanta Philosophy.

Prof Carlos Rocha, a mathematician from Venezuela delivered his discourse on ‘Vedantic Conception of the Original source of reality’. Prof Carlos Rocha was introduced by Prof L Fimate as one of the authorities of the world on the origin of life.

Talkers including Prof Carlos Rocha with the help of slide films talked about the origin of life by discarding the Darwinian Theory. Mr Rocha was of the opinion that ‘Life comes from life’.

Next, Dr Praveen Reddy coming from the college of Dental Sciences, Karnataka, India spoke on ‘Healthy Living: A way to peaceful life’. He came to the conclusion that healthy living is sure to have less problems. It is the scientific knowledge that helps human society.

As a result of which man can live a peaceful life. A society is a collection of families. Individuals are within the family. Such a situation of peacefulness may bring world peace in a wider sense.

After Mr Reddy, Dr Made Wardhana from the Bali island of Indonesia spoke on the topic ‘Psychoneuro-immunology: connecting mind-body and the spirit’. The pre-descendents of Dr Wardhana, himself a Hindu, as I believe it, must have been Indian origin.
  • Considering contents of the topic of International conference on Science and spirituality for world peace, Dr Wardhana tried to explain the impact of science on human body and his character and habit even including diet habit. Members and supporters of ISKCON insist people on having vegetarian diet. A vegetarian is a person who, for humane or religious reasons or for his health’s sake eats no meat.
  • Dr Wardhana aroused the attention of listening mind with his speech, ‘If a person is deeply involved in his or her religion with special interest, his or her immune system becomes stronger. He or she may not be attacked by infection or other disease frequently’.
  • It was also pointed out, as per valid statistics and datas, ‘If women eat meat, the number of sufferers of breast cancer was found to be four times more than those who do not eat meat’.
  • Dr Wardhana mentioned this point also, ‘If a person is in the habit of eating fish frequently or constantly, the membranes in the body might become thinner. The result is that immune system is becoming weaker’.
  • In his concluding part of his speech, Dr Wardhana pointed out with his recommendations that human living required space and greeneries, such as space of the plot (campus), buildings and rooms should not be congested. If the members of the family live in congestion without proper system of space, the women inmate who was a pregnant mother could face a trouble of abortion.
