Kumari Khaidem Tarubi - Traditional Costume Designing
KUMARI KHAIDEM TARUBI
Akademi Award: Other Forms of Art (Traditional Costume Designing)
Born in 1957 at Uripok Achom Leikai, Imphal, Km. Khaidem Tarubi belongs to a rare genus of people who have persevered to preserve the near-extinct and age-old customary art of traditional costume designing.
Bom into a family with a long history of practicing the art of traditional embroidery art, Km. Tarubi started learning the art of traditional costume designing at the age of seven from her grandmother, Smt. Khaidem Ongbi Tampakleima who herself was a State awardee in the field.
Her great grandmother was also a famous applique artiste of her time. Blessed with inherent talents, Km. Tarubi took no time in establishing herself as a traditional costume designer specialising in ‘Potloi’ making and other applique art.
She has also participated in various workshops-cum-demonstration to enhance her skills and knowledge.
The zeal to preserve these arts from extinction, which are no less than historical antiquities, is so strong that she has decided to dedicate her whole life towards the preservation of traditional costume designing.
In recognition of her exemplary contribution and relentless efforts to preserve the art of traditional costume designing, Km. Khaidem Tarubi is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
