Justice Verma puts focus back on AFSPA repeal

By calling for review of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Justice J S. Verma has put the focus back on the long-pending demand for repeal of the legislation. Justice Verma has recommended amendment to Section 6 of the AFSPA.
Significantly, Justice Verma’s recommendation runs close to what the Planning Commission has recommended in its 12th Five Year Plan document. The Twelfth plan will also initiate review of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) using a gender lens. Documentation of the gendered dimension of violations and needs assessment of women in disturbed areas presently under AFSPA will be done, the Plan document said.
