Advertisement for Junior Research Fellows (JRF) under SAFAR
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology is an autonomous research organization fully funded by Ministry of
Earth Sciences, New Delhi. It is a premier Institute of national and international repute, devoted to research in
various aspects of atmospheric sciences. The Institute has excellent infrastructural facilities such as high
performance computers, observational laboratories, modern library, workshop, etc. It has a strong link with
various universities and national and international organizations.
The institute has successfully implemented the ambitious project “System of Air Quality Forecasting and
Research (SAFAR)" for the 2 Metropolitan cities namely Delhi and Pune to predict the air quality for the first
time in our country, which is now an operational service. The institute is in the process of expanding the SAFAR
activities to Mumbai region and initiated the development of “SYSTEM OF AIR QUALITY FORECASTING
& RESEARCH” (SAFAR-MUMBAI) for the air quality forecasting services for Mumbai city.
The scope under the project would include- setting-up the monitoring network of air pollution and weather parameters;
development of emission inventory of criteria pollutants, advancement in high resolution weather and
atmospheric chemistry transport model for the nested domains and its operation in Super computers and
establishment of wireless communication system for public display. Data generated will also be utilized to
understand the scientific processes responsible for the variation of these pollutants on different time scales and
their impact on health and agriculture over India. For the above project, applications are invited from bright and
motivated young candidates for the temporary post of Junior Research Fellow (three numbers) which should lead
to Ph.D. degree. The place of work will be IITM, Pune. All selected candidates need to get involved in field
activities. Details are as follows:
Essential Qualifications:
M.Sc./M.Tech. in Atmospheric Sciences /Physics /Environmental Science /Environmental Engineering/
Meteorology/ Applied Mathematics/ Geophysics/ Electronics from a recognized university /institution.
NET/GATE qualified candidates will be given preference.
Desirable Qualifications:
1) Post-1 (Modeling): Good knowledge of working in LINUX /UNIX system and Fortran programming skill
along with WINDOWS. It is desirable if the candidate has hands on experience in WRF or WRF-Chem
model. Such candidate will be given special preference. Scope of work: Requires helping in development
and running the chemistry-transport air quality forecasting model and preparation of input data library.
2) Post-2 (Emissions): Good knowledge of computer usage in Windows and software packages. Knowledge of
Geographic information system (GIS) software is desirable. Scope of the work: Development of emission
inventory of pollutants and GHGs and field survey.
3) Post-3 (Observations and Assimilation): Good knowledge of instrumentation, computer usage and software
packages. Special preference to those who have experience in air pollution analysers and automatic weather
stations. Scope of the work: To help establish observational network in field (Mumbai), assimilation of
meteorological and air quality data on routine basis and analysis with field activity.
