‘It is not easy to be a woman threatre director in Manipur’
Times of India | Abdul Gani | TNN | Aug 30, 2015, 05.32 AM IST
Q. You are the first woman from Manipur to graduate from the prestigious National School of Drama. You have also won the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. Did you face any challenges?
A. I had to overcome many hurdles. I belong to a conservative Hindu family and my parents, especially my mother, never wanted me to get into theatre. They wanted me to concentrate on studies. When I was in college, they stopped funding my daily expenditure because of my interest in theatre. They told me that if I joined theatre, I would have to support myself.
I thought I needed to do something and took up private tuition as a means to sustain myself. We have a tradition of theatre which is centuries old but I am the first woman director from my state. That's how my journey began and I am still struggling. Some of my contemporaries have tried to run me down. Many even tried to malign me as I am single. It's difficult being a woman director.
