NEFIS SUBMITS MEMORANDUM TO UGC CHAIRPERSON!
DEMANDS IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF IRREGULARITIES IN DISBURSAL OF NON-NET FELLOWSHIPS AT MANIPUR UNIVERSITY!
WARNS OF INTENSIFICATION OF THE STRUGGLE ON THE ISSUE IF THE DEMANDS ARE NOT MET IMMEDIATELY!
The activists of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) yesterday submitted a memorandum to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairperson on the very urgent issue of irregularities in the disbursal of Non-NET fellowships to the research scholars enrolled at Manipur University.
NEFIS activists had submitted a memorandum regarding the same to Manipur University Vice-Chancellor last month. But, since there has been no action till now on its demands, the matter was raised before the UGC.
It should be known that these fellowships were instituted to be granted to all the research scholars i.e. those enrolled in M.Phil and Ph.D courses at the Central Universities across the country. But, earlier at Manipur University the scholars were being denied the fellowship, the amount for which had not been released since 2017.
Therefore, the research scholars represented by North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) had made a representation to the University Grants Commission (UGC) seeking an immediate intervention into the matter.
Subsequently, the UGC authorities had written to the MU authorities seeking a clarification in the matter. Consequent to it, the MU authorities had started disbursing the Non-NET fellowships to the research scholars vide Office Order/240 dated 12th June, 2019.
However, still many irregularities concerning the disbursal of the fellowship remain. The scholars are only being given fellowship amount of 3 months, and it is not at all made clear by the university as to which particular months they have received their fellowships for.
Further, some things still remain unclear as to when do the scholars start receiving their fellowships i.e. from the date of their admission as at all other Central Universities or after the completion of their coursework.
NEFIS, through the memorandum, has demanded that UGC should ensure that these irregularities are immediately removed by the MU administration. NEFIS would be intensifying its struggle on the issue if its demands are not accepted soon by the UGC.
