Irom Sharmila supporters on nationwide satyagraha
The Telegraph | Dipanjan Sinha | Calcutta, April 5
Zaheeb Ajmal, a college student in Patna, is facing a dichotomy. Working for a campaign that confronts people with the uncomfortable realities of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, he is confused whether the people he has talked to in the past few months consider him a terrorist or a patriot.
He says he acquired this “enriching” experience while working from Bihar for the Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign that gained vigour last October to catapult the story of Irom Sharmila Chanu and her more than 11-year fast for repeal of the draconian act from the coffee table of the intellectual to the discourse of the common man outside Manipur.
Says Biswajit, who is co-ordinating the campaign in Orissa: “We do not have the AFSPA in Orissa. But people here face different forms of state excesses so the empathy was not too difficult to find. The government needs to at least initiate a process of dialogue with Sharmila.”
