Irom Sharmila completes 11 years of hunger strike
Hindustan Times | Sobhapati Samom | Imphal, November 04, 2011
Manipur's 'iron lady' Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has now become an iconic figure, will complete 11 years of struggle against the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act, on Saturday. This 38-year-old poet and activist from Manipur has been on hunger strike since November, 2000 to have the act, which provides unlimited powers to security forces to shoot at sight and arrest anybody without a warrant, repealed.
She launched the indefinite hunger strike after she heard of the killing of 10 people by 8 Assam Rifles in Malom, on the outskirts Imphal.
