International Women's Day 8th March 2014
9th March 2014
For the first time, the Centre for Organisation Research & Education (CORE) and the
MSW Department of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus,
Manipur (IGNTU-RCM) in association with Indigenous Perspectives (IP) celebrated
International Women’s Day with the theme “Inspiring Change” on 8th March 2014 at
Conference Hall, IGNTU (RCM) at Adimjati Campus, Imphal.
The programme, moderated by Dr Debabrata Roy Laifungbam, was highlighted by the
presentation by Ms Nandini Thockchom of Indigenous Perspectives on “women’s roles in
inspiring change”, ‘wari-watai’ – an open forum discussion on women’s rights in Manipur
hosted by Indigenous Perspectives, a presentation by Ms Gaby Golmei, student of
IGNTU, on “violence against women in Manipur – a journey of 60 days, and a role play –
skit – performed by the students of the MSW Department of IGNTU followed by an
unplugged musical performance by Akhu Chingangbam, of Imphal Talkies, and Ms Riki Chingangbam.
With lead presenters Jinine Laishramcha and Erendro Leichombam, wari-watai
generated an animated discussion on the ‘male gaze’ from the traditional and modern
perspectives, and self-reflection and the candid individual narrative as unlearning tools
for inspiring change for both males and females to bring about gender equality in all
spheres of life - personal and social.
Gaby Golmei’s presentation furthered the
discussion to include individual responsibility in taking action for change while Nandini
Thockchom set the stage for the introspection on individual and social mindscapes
regarding discrimination of women in Manipur. Akhu presented melodic commentaries
with his lyrics drawn from the wide-ranging settings of structural and interpersonal relational violence.
