Secondly, the population growth rate of Myanmar is very favourable. At the annual growth rate of 1.2 per cent it is as best as one can expect. Thirdly, with only about 17 per cent of the total arable land under permanent crops so far, the scope for agricultural expansion without worrying much for declines in marginal productivity is tremendous. This is further reinforced by the very low level of irrigation in the country, the improvement of which itself would do wonders. So with modern technology, modern infrastructure and modern inputs the agricultural sector can still take the Myanmar economy far. Fourth, the fact that the emigration of skilled manpower is not a problem for Myanmar itself provides a scope for fully taking advantage of the unfolding Asian manufacturing boom by a single point agendum of technical capacity building through collaboration with the neighbouring countries and without much high cost.
