If on a hunger strike, keep the decibel level high
Times of India | Dhananjay Mahapatra, TNN | Jun 20, 2011, 01.38am IST
When one fasts, or goes on hunger strike, he needs to keep the decibel level up to attract media glare and consequently that of the government. Of course, the theme of the fast has to be a catchy one. And nothing sells better than 'corruption'.
Sharmila was 28 years old when she saw Assam Rifles personnel butcher 10 persons including a 62-year-old woman and a child bravery award winning girl in Imphal valley's Malom village in Manipur in November 2000. She went on a fast demanding withdrawal of AFSPA, which protected the perpetrators from being brought to book. The government arrested her on charges of attempt to suicide and force fed her.
Sharmila is asking the government to give full expression to the right to life. For, AFSPA allows armed forces to arrest, shoot and even kill people on suspicion. She feels withdrawal of AFSPA could prevent recurrence of Malom-like massacres.
Why did Team Anna not bother to express solidarity with her? Why did they not stand by the side of Swami Nigamanand who died protesting against illegal sand mining on Ganga river bed? It was interesting to note Hazare's quick letter to the PM about enacting a law to protect journalists after the murder of J Dey in Mumbai.
