ICSSR-NERC
Training-cum-Workshop on
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)
13th to 22nd February 2012
Social sciences are increasingly using empirical data base. Social scientists need to use various statistical tools in order to arrive at
meaningful inferences. Most of the statistical tools are available in the form of computer software. While the social science teaching has
mainly remained traditional, descriptive and narrative, the social science research has become technique oriented. The gap in
traditional teaching curriculum and technique oriented research has made it difficult for the researchers to make meaningful contribution
in the realm of epistemology and knowledge.
It has been increasingly felt by the research community in the northeastern region that this gap needs to be filled. A number of
requests have been received from the scholars of this region in this regards. Keeping this felt need in mind, ICSSR-NERC feels that it is
our duty to help the social science researchers in this region to equip themselves in various quantitative and qualitative techniques of
data analysis particularly to arrange some training for them in social science software like SPSS, STATISTICA, etc. It is needless to
mention that such capacity building among the social scientists will go a long way in improving the quality of social science research in this region.
Some ground work has already been initiated to this end. Senior faculty members who are well-versed in these tools and are willing to
act as resource persons have already been identified. A tentative course module has been worked out. The Centre has a computer lab with
adequate number of computers to organize this programme.
In this regard, the North Eastern Regional Centre of the India Council of Social Science Research intends to conduct a ten-day
training-cum-workshop on Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS) at Shillong, with an aim to provide the above mentioned training to
young research scholars/lecturers drawn from different areas of North Eastern India. The workshop will allocate equal time for theory as
well as practicals on using the software packages.
In the forenoon, theoretical classes may be conducted and in the afternoon practicals may be conducted. In the theoretical classes, statistical techniques
(elementary as well as advanced such as different methods in multivariate analysis) will be taught first. Then, having given the
basic structure of the software, exercises on the statistical techniques using the software will be imparted.
