Human Trafficking Rising in Manipur
The North East Today | Jimmy Levion | Nov 10, 2016
Human trafficking, particularly child trafficking, has been on the rise in Manipur though it largely remained elusive from the public domain. The alarming rate is evident as altogether 58 reported cases of child trafficking have been recorded within first six months of the current year. It is learnt that from 2013 to June 2016, 62 cases of child trafficking were recorded.
Sometimes mere statistics can tell a story. In the month of February 2016 alone, 29 children of Churchandpur, Ukhrul and Imphal were reportedly rescued from Meghalaya. In April, 17 children from Sugnu, Thoubal district were intercepted by Sekmai police along the National Highway 102 (Imphal-Dimapur road), who were on their way to Tamil Nadu and in June 12 children from Churachandpur district were reportedly rescued from Tamil Nadu.
