Horrible roads
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: April 13 2015 -
Almost every day there are public outbursts against the government failure to construct and repair roads although the horrible road conditions are there for everyone to see.
A government worth the name should have discharged its duty without finger pointings from the incensed members of public who are paying taxes to the government for such developmental works.
In almost all cases the slothful government employees are propelled to some actions at slow motion when the residents block all vehicular traffic and it is a sad commentary on the performances or lack of the same of the Congress ministry.
The adulterated fuel on sale and the bad road conditions have had their adverse impact on the vehicles.
This is one of the reasons why car workshops have mushroomed in all the four valley districts.
The roads with potholes are also major causes of accidents some of which were fatal or caused life threatening injuries.
If the road conditions are in such a sorry state the situation at rural and hill areas are best left to imagination.
Ignoring the zero performances of the departments concerning the construction and maintenance of the national, state highways and inter village roads some over-ambitious ministers underpinned by the scheming officials had made demands to hand over the construction and maintenance of the national highways to the state government.
However this was rejected with the contempt it deserved. It was made out in the local media that the officials of the BRO/BRTF in charge of the NH 37 are shirking their basic responsibilities.
What is the use of making a hue and cry in the local media?
The state government should have made an issue of it in the proper platform with undeniable evidence.
Regrettably the state government has not done anything which means that the higher ups at Delhi are not much aware of the game plan.
Considering the fact that Manipur has no rail lines due importance should have been given in the construction, improvement and maintenance of the existing highways.
The under construction rail lines will perhaps become operations after two generations and the present day mortals will die without seeing a train in the state.
On many flimsy pretexts visiting dignitaries are taken by helicopter to Moreh and other stations.
They are mostly airlifted even for the short stretch from the airport to Raj Bhavan.
The motive is to conceal the bitter facts from them.
The BJP should have prevailed upon the union ministers to experience where the shoe pinches.
Or are they planning not to throw stones at the glass house where, if one has to believe the state unit president, they will soon stay?
The enraged people are resorting to agitations, the kind of which is not seen anywhere in the country.
It is a shame for the government and disappointment for the hapless tax payers.
