Hidden Depths
K. Radhakumar *
The sun shines all day
And has no complaints.
The sun's gone to bed
To rise in time.
It's been a long day.
I'm dog tired -
I'm going to bed.
I didn't have a good day.
'Have a nice day!'
My wife said to me in the morning.
I'll try to get some rest
And recharge my batteries.
I lie in bed
But for some reason
I can't sleep.
I know I need to get some sleep;
I know I'll feel better
After a good night's sleep.
Tomorrow
I've a full day's work.
Why do the recurring questions of my life
Come only at bedtime?
Who am I?
What is life?
Where do I begin
And where do I end?
I seem to have been caught up
In a vortex of chain of events
From no beginning to no end.
Sometimes I catch sight of life
A beautiful woman
Out of the corner of my eye
And she winks at me.
The sight makes enlightening reading
But for a moment;
That's the wonder of life -
You're always coming across
Something beautiful, something new.
There's no missing link
In the chain of events in motion.
It's a strange story
And through my love
It achieves a narrative continuity
For one sweet moment.
The next, I'm right back
Where I've started,
The thinking soul
Looking for the beautiful woman.
