Gulmohar
Moirangthem Minakshi Devi *
Beside a lane at Lamphel, stands a Gulmohar.
Footing through the Earth's breast, it's robust and tall.
Trunks gnarled and sepia, yet it's cynosure of all eyes,
Fiery red May flowers moving with the early summer zephyr.
Wading through every winter, triumphing by late spring,
Dropping its petals overground, announcing the monsoon in wait.
A panoply of memories, taking me to a trip,
A trip of Nostalgia where I see relic haze of childhood.
I grew gamboling around it with boon companions,
Dismantling its flower buds to make strange nails.
And spent leisure times gazing in awe, how on it the warbler built its nest.
I aged with the passage of years, but not the Gulmohar,
Under its flamboyant delightful shade rest the Sugarcane Vendor.
It shades many of passing feet on warm canicular days.
Seldom, I stop by on a blue breezy noon.
To quench my thirst with dulcet sugarcane succus.
And watch the vibrant petal swirls down on asphalt road .
I photograph the delightful sight, which is fleeting and bid it goodbye.
Until next spring, when the Gulmohar again is back to life.
