Guidelines for school bags by children to school

Guidelines of adverse effects of heavy school bags by children to school which has direct effect on health of the children;
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), Govt. of India is aware of the reports of the study conducted by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and parents of the school children regarding the above subject and recommended the following steps to be taken up by the State School Education Department, Govt. of Manipur for effective measures on a larger level.
I. It should be ensured that the weight of school bags is not more than 10 percent of the weight of the child.
II. Also, children in pre-primary classes should not carry any books/notebooks to the school.
III. To bring effective change, sensitization and awareness is required at three levels- for Principals, Teachers and Parents. For this appropriate short term awareness/training programmes should be conducted.
IV. The schools should be directed to issue guidelines for all students to carry books as per the time-table and also suggest suitable, safe ways to carry bag.
V. Also, the school should issue directions to all teachers to pre-inform students about the books/notebooks to be carried on a particular day.
VI. Appropriate action should be taken against any school not following the guidelines.
2. The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has also directed to the Commissioner (School Education), Govt. of Manipur to issue necessary Guidelines to all schools affiliated to the BOSEM and COHSEM for immediate compliance and submit action taken report to the Commission.
3. For effecting monitoring of the above recommendation, the Manipur Child Commission is constituting a team comprising of its Members, District Child Protection Units and NGOs to undertake inspections/surprise visits in the State.
