Greeting the readers each day for 16 years : Looking back and ahead
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: September 11 2015 -
16 years is a pretty long time. This much is true when the number of years is viewed in the context of the life-span of an individual.
However it has been our guiding principle that this calculation should not apply to a newspaper.
Sure the number of years in existence may mean something but it is the manner in which the years that have been spent that is of more importance to us here at The Sangai Express.
Today, The Sangai Express (English and Manipuri edition) completes 16 years in existence and looking back, we would like to believe that it is not the number of years which has determined the standing of this newspaper in the consciousness of the people but the quality of the content that comes as news as well as opinions.
It was with this belief that the staff and the management went to work till late into the night of September 10 and the first copy of this newspaper hit the news stand on September 11, 1999.
It has not always been easy but the beauty of the profession of journalism lies in the challenges that come every day. No mantra to face the challenges but if there has been one philosophy which has enabled us to face all the challenges it has been team work.
At the risk of repeating a point, no one is a star here but everyone is a prized performer, an asset to the organisation.
And so it stands that the copy of The Sangai Express which the reader reads every morning with his morning cuppa is the sum product of the management, the Editor, the Sub-Editors, the Reporters, the computer experts, the boys and girls at the advertisement section, the machine men, the distribution section, the correspondents, the contributors, the columnists and all those who share their thoughts and ideas.
16 years down the line and today The Sangai Express stands tall, yes tall. We came at that point of time when Manipur was ready for a major take off, professionally, technically and management wise too.
The market too seemed ready for a major change and it is in line with this that we have progressed from a six paged, mono-coloured newspaper to a 12 paged multi-coloured publication today.
The emergence of young and educated boys and girls, who are committed to the profession of journalism too has gone a long way in helping the progress of this newspaper.
Tapping the best brains for this profession has not been easy and this is where the far sightedness of the management has to be acknowledged.
In a way we are privileged to be associated with some of the revolutionary changes that have been seen in the world of print media in Manipur and for this one we doff our hats to everyone, starting from the readers and subscribers, the talented and hard working young boys and girls, the advertisers and the well wishers as well.
This however is not the end. With the wishes of the readers and patrons, we hope to proceed further and we take this opportunity to thank everyone for making the journey meaningful.
