Govt expenditure on projects |

A community hall as big as 100 feet in length and 40 feet in wide could be constructed with just Rs 11.5 lakhs at Sugnu. This is an eye opener to all. If the construction was left with the engineering department it is estimated that not less than Rs 60 lakhs would be spent. Chief Minister quipped that the PWD sent up a bill of Rs five lakhs for construction of a podium during the visit of the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, while at the same time the construction of a similar structure at Kodompokpi could be done with only Rs 90,000. We cannot deny the fact that the engineering department has the habit of framing estimated cost at escalated value. The reason is not far to seek. Is the cost of the project framed at escalated value to enable engineers and other concerned to collect hefty money from the Govt project? This is true that even one fourth of the estimated value is not spent on the project. As the Chief Minister went to inaugurate the hall constructed with minimum expenditure at Sugnu he had a feel of the worst road condition between Kakching Lamkhai and Sugnu. That portion of the road needs immediate attention of the Govt because such a long road which connects important places of the state cannot be left in its present form. Likewise the NH no 39 from Mao to Imphal has also seen potholes appearing at different areas. National highways passing through the state are the mirrors of the state. The neighboring states have felt the need for improving the condition of both the state and National highway roads. The same feeling should enter the minds of the Govt of Manipur also. We cannot expect the tourists visiting the state to bear the kind of trouble as we are facing in using our roads. But the Govt will have a different thing to say. That makes us sad. A sensible Govt should act as per the wishes of the people. The people of the state want better roads.
