Game of Majority and impact in Manipur
By: N.Surjit Meitei *

"Majority wins the vote" is a well-known phrase in the world of democracy. And we being a citizen of India are quite familiar with this term. It is well known fact that in a democratic country the decision of the mass depends on the count of the head rather then the viability of the ideas to be implemented. Sometimes there are cases of the fools, I would rather say those of the morons and there moronic ideas getting implemented just because of the reason that the fools are greater in number then the wiser lot.

It is also known that politician are more interested in their own gain and wads exchanging hence public welfare ultimately takes a back seat. Therfore everyone must understand the universal fact that Manipuri politicians who are in power and those in opposition are all from the same flock and they wait for the right time to catch and pounced the ministerial chair by shedding crocodile tears in front of the general public. The same political ambience holds good in most part of the country.

I m not interested in discussing the civics and parliamentary affairs of the Indian constitution, atleast after seeing the central govt. reaction to the incidence and related incidence that happened with the AFSPA. But I would like the people of the northeast state to observe the trend of the parliamentary affairs and take advantage of it for our own benefit. I am not a psephologist but I feel the need of the hour is to find a good shepherd to guide the rudderless politicians of the northeast to take our region to a new era.

After an association with India for more then 5 decades our region remains one of the most underdeveloped places even with the presence of many revenue earning opportunities. When the whole world now thrive in electrical power Electrification of village still continue to be a major achievement in many of the northeastern state. Load shedding of electrical power is a well-known colloquial language. Is it a result of a deliberate sinisterly idea of some fanatics from the mainland? or Is it a corollary of Murphy's law that most of the foolish implementation got implemented in the north eastern state.

Are we the unlucky lot or are we the targeted, one ready to always take the shot. That too always a bull's eye hit? But one thing is for sure there is always an alienation of the northeastern state from the mainland. There may be many factors for this alienation; a mongoloid look with an all different dialects we people from the north eastern region speaks. But the alienation is against our benefit and it is our responsibility to make our own road to the future. The union home minister took 2 months to come down to Manipur to take stock of the situation that aroused out of the AFSPA.

I bet Mr. Shivraj Patil and Mr Manmohan would have been out of power in a jiffy had they committed the same cynical act to West Bengal, Tamilnadu ,Karrnataka or Punjab. Any murder or incidence that happen in mainland India gets a wider coverage in the media and are entitled for more discussion hour on the floor of the parliament. And I think this behavior of the politicians and central govt. is the perfect budding ground for secessionist ideas.

The condition may even get worse one day if the forced alienation of the north east state from the outside world is not addressed at the least possible time. God forbid, but there is always a lurking possibility of Pakistan and China sponsoring the secessionist and northeast becoming another Kashmir. The ambience is just right for this to happen.

Most of the decision taken by minister takes into consideration the outcome of his decision and the probability of his chance to stay clutching in the ministerial power .There lies the crux and the reason behind our uproar that we are not given our due advantage. When any problem happens in manipur there is only two Member of Parliament to support and speak up for the cause. When anything happens in Bihar, UP and some other state with a good representation in the parliament there is a gamut of MP's to shout for the cause irrespective of the severity of the problem.

In trying to please those politicians who are in majority and increase his chance to stay in power as a minister the issue is not addressed properly. AFSPA is An act used by British to suppressed the Indian freedom fighters from revolting against them . As a fellow country mates I can advocate that if AFSPA is right then Indian freedom struggle was wrong - as the Indian politicians are now strongly supporting and grooming AFSPA. Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Subash Chandra Bose may have got freedom from the British colonizer but they have made their successors to be a colonizer. Mainland citizens may discard this as the darker side of democracy but being a minority community we are facing the axe falling on our head.

People from North- East are all busy fighting among ourselves for petty gains but the time has come to unite to fight for a better cause. Formation of a Regional party representing the people of north east is the key, if we want to be heard and addressed by the central govt. Regional parties representing North East will be able to play major role in govt. formation of the country.

Once you have a say in the govt. formation I bet every laloo, manmohan,s hivraj patil, sonia and pranab mukherjee mention all the puppet politicians you know and heard of, they will address you properly…To give a slight picture of the power commanded by regional parties you all might have known sleepless night given to every Prime minister by AIADMK, DMK, TDP, BSP.

When you hold one string of the puppet you can let it dance to your tunes very easily. A quick search and .Mr Purno Sangma fits the bill to start thinking of ideas to start a regional party in North East region rather than helter-sheltering around to form a national party. He already has a base in the Indian politics and commands good amount of respect among his contemporary politicians.

Its high time that he returns the believe people from northeast has shown for such a long time. We all should find politician with some messiah attitude to take up this initiative to put our region in a position from where we have a say in the Indian politics rather then staying as a silent spectator. The moment we set our feet firmly in a commanding position we will not be taken lightly by the mainland people.

In an era where the rule of living is "SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST" we should have a strong base from where we can fight for our right. The release of Kangla is a ray that should guide us in our struggle for our right. Let's hope that the release of Kangla after a long occupation of 113 years is the dawning of a new era and will bring glory to Manipur and the North East region as a whole.
