Fragment of a Dream
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
The road is long,
Very long;
I have walked for a long, long time
And covered a good deal of ground
But no progress is made.
No, no progress at all.
I try to be myself
I don't know if I'll ever become myself
But try I'll
And I have been trying since daybreak.
I look back
And ask for a progress report:
The higgledy-piggledy collection of jottings
A way of life brilliant in its conception
A cultural revolution
The gap between a brilliant idea
and its realization
The caterpillar dying a caterpillar
Without undergoing a metamorphosis
And turning into a butterfly –
It's all Greek to me.
I look back
And see my shadow
And surprise, surprise, it's not mine.
Only my shadow is lengthened
As the sun is going down.
Yes, I have gone grey
And I am a grey figure standing alone
In the heart of this grim, grey city
Under a grey sky.
I feel I am socialised,
Socialised to the core
Quite familiar with our culture,
Ways of eating and drinking
And also spending the honeymoon period
before marriage.
Society in front of me
Society to the left
And society everywhere
In society I am finished.
To the one who is worldly-wise
There is nothing surprising
In the sun setting in the west.
